Cooked tomatoes 'better for you than raw'
Scientists say cooked tomatoes are much better for you than raw ones. They say sauces and stews made from the fruit fight heart disease and increase its effectiveness against cancers.
The research dispels the popular notion that processed fruits and vegetables have lower nutritional value than fresh produce.

Bolognese potatoe
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 can of tomatoes
- 30ml tomato puree
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1 clove of crushed garlic
- 1 medium carrot, peeled and sliced
- 500g minced beef
- 100g diced bacon
- Teaspoon of olive oil
- 4 Potatoes
PREPARATION:
Heat a pan with the olive oil, throw in the onions, bacon and mince to fry till brown. Include the rest of the ingerdients except the potatoes. Simmer for 45 min. Steam the potatoes and crush up with butter, creating a smooth texture.
Serves 4.
Competition
The Metropolis Tomato Growers Association welcomes all chefs of the Metropolis area to take part in our Tasty Tomatoes competition. Tasty Tomatoes competition encourages chefs throughout the city of Metropolis to use tomatoes in their cooking.
The winner of each category receives $5,000 in prize money.
Chefs throughout Metropolis are encouraged to:
- Feature their favourite tomato dishes on their menu during the month of September 2006.
- Register to enter the competition by contacting the Metropolis Tomato Growers Association before 31 August 2006.
- Participate in the Association's radio advertising campaign by providing a number of prizes of a "dinner for two" to be given away on air.
The competition has four categories:
- Best Restaurant Menu using Tomatoes
- Best Pub/Club Menu using Tomatoes
- Best Cafe/Bistro Menu using Tomatoes
- Best Takeaway Menu using Tomatoes
The judging criteria for all categories include:
- the number of tomato dishes on the menu
- the type and volume of tomatoes used
- the level of creativity of the tomato dishes
